Everyone has something to give no matter what their age, everyone has different life, learning and work experiences that we can pass onto each other to make improvements within ourselves and others around us.
Training can often be tailored to the younger generation, such as learning opportunities provided only on an app, which the older generation have not grown up with and may struggle to use properly.
Examples of age discrimination include discounting a colleague from a promotion because they are considered too young to lead a team, or not hiring an individual because you feel they are too old and make assumptions around their fitness and mobility.
Age is not a measure of competence; an older individual is no less capable than a younger individual and vice versa.
The Equality Act 2010 says that you must not be discriminated against because:
Age groups can be quite wide (for e.g.‘people under 50’ or quite specific (for e.g.‘people in their mid-40s’).
‘’We have all been treated differently because of our age. As a team we are diverse and can express multiple views, allowing us to relate to any situation. We all value our staff no matter what their age, we can all learn from each other to improve ourselves and our performance at work’’
