No-one should be treated differently because of skin colour, ethnicity, culture, or heritage.
Race/ethnicity does not define competence or capability and we should all feel valued for our differences and the value these bring to the workplace and our wider communities.
It is direct race discrimination to treat someone less favourably than someone else would be treated in the same circumstances, because of race.For example, overlooking an individual for a job opportunity because of their ethnicity.
It is indirect race discrimination to have a rule, policy, or practice which people of a particular racial, ethnic,or national group are less likely to be able to meet than other people, and this places them at a disadvantage. Examples include an employer insisting that candidates for a job should have UK qualifications or an employer insisting that someone has English as a first language.
The Equality Act 2010 says you must not be discriminated against because of your race.
