Why is sexuality a protected characteristic?

Ultimately, it is the right and correct thing to do.

Sexual orientation is protected to ensure discrimination does not occur based on sexual orientation for any reason in the workplace and recruitment process.

Types of Discrimination

Discrimination can either be direct (because someone is of an orientation) or indirect (when someone is associated with an orientation). Example of discrimination include:

Providing or denying opportunity or offering preferential or detrimental treatment based on an individual’s sexual orientation
Similarly, discriminating based on an assumed orientation, whether that is true or not. For example – it is illegal to pass over someone for a promotion on the grounds that he or she is thought to be of a homosexual orientation
Insulting someone, making disparaging remarks, threatening them or carrying out any kind of bullying or harassment based on orientation

What does the Equality Act 2010 say about sexuality?

The Equality Act 2010 says you must not be discriminated against because:

you are heterosexual, gay, lesbian, or bisexual
someone thinks you have a particular sexual orientation (this is known as discrimination by perception)
you are connected to someone who has a particular sexual orientation (this is known as discrimination by association)
