Black History Month 2024

Black History Month (BHM) is an annual event held every October to celebrate, recognise and honour the important contributions and achievements of black individuals by sharing stories and experiences.

The theme this year is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, which will focus on the untold stories and histories of Black people in the UK. Regional Manager and Race Network lead, Clarence Hyman, has created a campaign of information that investigates this theme in more depth, and encourages colleagues join the movement.

Clarence says, “It’s important for our colleagues to feel empowered to come forward and talk about unsung heroes or untold stories that have been overlooked or misrepresented so we can together to challenge racism and improve inclusion and equality, not just at Corps Security, but across the security industry”

The campaign considers factors across history that have impacted the marginalisation of Black history, and what can be done to enhance a more inclusive historical narrative. Clarence highlights the three steps required to move towards inclusion.

  1. Curriculum Reform: Educational institutions need to revamp their curricula to include comprehensive and accurate accounts of Black history, highlighting achievements and struggles equally.
  2. Public Engagement: Community engagement initiatives focused on celebrating Black history through festivals, discussions, and exhibitions can raise awareness and encourage dialogue.
  3. Support Representation: Advocating for greater representation in media, public domains, and political spheres is essential for valuing and recognising Black history and contributions.

Reflecting on how we can effect change, he shares, “The journey towards a comprehensive understanding of Black history is an ongoing endeavour that will ultimately enrich the broader tapestry of British identity. The fight for recognition is not merely historical but is also a vital endeavour for achieving social justice and equality in contemporary society.”

Clarence Hyman has been with Corps Security since 2015, he is an active member in the EDI space and is a Corps Together Guardian. You can read more about Clarence here.
