Why is religion a protected characteristic?

No one religion or branch of a religion overrides another, all beliefs are protected and equal whether religious or philosophical.

Employees are protected against discrimination because they have a religious faith or a philosophical belief, as well as because they do not.

Types of Discrimination

Pre-conceived ideas of what someone is like based on their religion and or who they are married to/associate with.

Direct discrimination could include deciding not to hire an applicant because of their religion or refusing to develop or promote an employee because of their religion.

Treating a person unfavourably due to religious beliefs.

Excluding individuals from social activities based on being or not being of a certain faith.

What does the Equality Act 2010 say about religion?

The Equality Act 2010 says you must not be discriminated against because:

You are (or are not) of a particular religion
You hold (or do not hold) a particular philosophical belief
Someone thinks you are of a particular religion or hold a particular belief (this is known as discrimination by perception)
You are connected to someone who has a religion or belief (this is known as discrimination by association)

Engage with faith leaders, to improve connections and support our colleagues
Be mindful and take the time to understand individual situations and emotional consequences of our behaviours
